Vista Icon Database

by admin on Jan.19, 2010, under Computers, Software

Just a quick note.  At work we’ve moved to using custom color coded folder icons to differentiate between public information, nondisclosure and the such.  While testing out different icons, I noticed that vista ended up caching them locally.  Which of course just wouldn’t do.

You can find the Icon database at:
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\IconCache.db

%userprofile% , if you havent guessed already, points to the users local profile folder.

These folders and files are hidden by default, you can ether enable viewing hidden files and folders under file options or just browse to the folder via the command prompt (cmd.exe).

Once you can see the file, all you have to do is delete it and either restart explorer.exe or reboot.  What ever your most comfortable with.
